The national currency of
Kyrgyzstan is a Som (S, KGS). One sum is 100 tyyins. In
circulation there are banknotes in denominations of 1, 5, 10,
50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 coms, as well as 1, 10, and 50
tyyina. Coins in the country not in use.
Som is the only legal bank note in the territory of the Kyrgyz
Republic, although the U.S. dollar and Euro are accepted at
hotels. Banks are open from 9.00-9.30 to 17.00-17.30 Monday to
Friday, weekend - Saturday and Sunday.
Currency can be exchanged at the offices of banks, exchange
offices (usually run around the clock), and in many stores. Not
only U.S. dollars and euros, but also the British Pound, the
Russian ruble and Kazakh tenge, Uzbek soums, Chinese yuan and
other currencies are exchanged. We do recommend to exchange in
the capital where the exchange rate is higher rather than in the
regions. While exchanging U.S. dollars it is
recommended to have currency in good condition and issued later
than 2000th.Credit cards are accepted at most banks
and some large hotels in Bishkek .Traveler's checks can be
cashed at the offices of major banks, licensed exchange offices
and in some large stores of the capital, but the fees are quite
high (3-7%). In the provinces, to use non-cash means of payment
is almost impossible.
